1. People I have been travelling a lot, but in Bali I have met most beautiful people. They are friendly, happy, open and can surprise you when you least expect it. Last time when I was there, family from my homestay, surprised me with a cake, flowers and song in my birthday morning. They even apologised that the flowers were local! And I only met these people a week ago. They are willing to share their traditions and customs with you and are so happy if you are making your efforts to understand and show respect to their culture. Balinese people follow strictly their religion and karma, so they believe that whatever you do, everything comes back sooner or later:) Yes, there are exceptions, but in general, they want that you remain happy, even fixing something takes long time or compromise lot of negotiation. Yes there are lot of men on the streets offering you taxi service or tours, but they are not pressuring you to take it. If you say no, thank you, they thank you in return and ask maybe tomorrow:) Same in shops- they are grateful for visiting it, but not trying to make you buy everything. Always ask better price or ask from different sellers, there are always better offers available, because it brings good karma:) Life in Bali goes along with ceremonies and they have ceremony for everything from birth till death. There are ceremony for every thing on earth and nothing happens without ceremony. People stop working, if there is a ceremony, if you bought or sold something, make a ceremony. So more than half of their incomes goes to making ceremony and if you have lot of money, you make more and bigger ceremonies. I asked, what they would do, when they earned more money, they said, that they would put all their extra money for making bigger ceremonies! Because it brings luck and protection to their family, house, car, food, for everything. Balinese are really open to share all their ceremonies with you, but you must show respect to their traditions. Please wear sarong and sash, shoulders covered. Please dont touch children s head (it is the most sacred place on human body), please dont face your bare feet to somebody. Please take off your shoes, if you enter rooms, temples, shops. I have seen so many tourist willing to take part of ceremonies, but not understanding that it is not show for them, but its something very sacred for Balinese people. I even saw a lady wearing mini skirt when visiting most honoured healer in Bali. Yes she had really long legs, but this is not the place, I was so embarrassed. If you dont know how to dress or act, please ask before you do. Tegelikult on tegemist väga pühade protseduuridega, milleks tehakse suuri ettevalmistusi. Seega kui sa tahad olla osaline, siis austa Balit, kanna sarongi, salli ümber piha kattes õlad. Ära katsu laste päid (sest see on kõige püham koht) ja ära istu paljaste jalgadega inimeste poole. Võta ära jalanõud enne ruumidesse, poodidesse, templitesse sisenemist. Küsi enne, kui sa otsustad midagi teha. Ükskord ma isegi nägin ühte kaunist pikajalgset naisterahvast miniseelik seljas, külastamas Bali kõige pühamat tervendajat ning mul oli tõesti väga piinlik. 2. Magic I believe in magic and there is a lot of magic in Bali, Island of Gods. First time when I visited Bali, I didnt have any expectations and it was wonderful experience. Second time I had expectations, I was looking for answers, because there was a great mess in my life, but nothing happened and I was so frustrated. People often go to Bali to look for something. They visit several healers, readers, go to ceremonies (water, fire, flower, dancing etc), get many healing-ayurvedic massages, buy different magical things and try everything to get healed and find their ways in life. Then the vacation is over, you fly back and nothing really changes. Been there and done that:) Yes, there are lot of people who know and can really work with magic in Bali, but as it says: "Teacher appears when the student is ready". It happens, when you have yourself. There is an inner Guru in every one of us, but its hard to find him, or listen to her. So we go far away to find it, but you cant run away from yourself. If you dont find it here, you dont find it in Bali either. So if you want to solve something or find the answers, dont go so far, dont waste your money, dont look your answers from somewhere or from someone. There is time and place for change. If you have found yourself and time is there, go with open heart. Dont expect anything and everything is there, all that magic, everywhere and when you least expect it. 3. Views Plan your journey, but do not forget to enjoy the views and views in Bali are stunning. The nature is an amazing, so green, so lush, so fresh. Although it is hot and humid and there is lot of heavy rain in the low season (november till may), I love it. There are so much to see in Bali. Every household is like a temple with beautiful garden. Every house in compound is located according their rules like a labyrinth, because they have belief that demons cant take corners:) Every family has their temples in their households, there are temples in the village and big temples in every county. Definitely visit waterpalace near to Candidasa and watertemples, that you can find everywhere around Bali, Depending on the ceremony, the temple is decorated with textiles, flowers in different colours and bamboo. Offerings to the gods are also colourful, big and consists of flowers, bamboo, sweets, rice and other food. Same are their national costumes, handmade, bright and with beautiful patterns. In Bali, everybody finds something to fall in love. There are high mountains, black, yellow, white sand beaches. Blue, green, grey sea or beautiful waterfalls with spring water. Amazing rice terraces around. My favourite places are Candidasa (east, on seaside), Ubud (centre of Bali), Uluwatu (west). Most touristic places are Kuta and Seminyak, where are all the popular brands and food courts are presented and nightlife is wild. Sanur is also touristic place with big hotel chains, but more quiet and suitable for families. Uluwatu and Canggu are popular among the surfers. Nusa Dua is a resort where all the fancy hotels are located. Sama värvilised on nende rahvuslikud kostüümid, millel on käsitööna erinevad mustrid. Kindlasti külasta veetempleid, mida leidub palju üle kogu bali. Samuti kuningale ehitatud vee-lossi, kust avanevad imelised vaated. Balil on igale maitsele midagi vaadata. 4- 5 Yoga and Food
Bali is a yoga and food heaven. Do yoga 24hrs 7 days a week. Eat as much as you can, you can get everything vegan, non vegan, glutenfree, lactosefree, raw, juices, smoothies, healthy, non healthy- sky is the limit! Bali on toidu ja joogaparadiis. Tee joogat 24h päevas, 7 päeva nädalas ja söö kõike, mida hing ihkab. Kõike on saadaval taime-liha, gluteenivaba, laktoosivaba, toores, mahlad, smuutid, tervislik, mitte tervislik- ainult taevas on piiriks! Read more about yoga and food in Bali here/Loe rohkem toidust ja joogast siit: http://estonianyogini.weebly.com/blogblogi/my-bali-vol-3-yoga-and-food-heaven-minu-bali-vol-3-jooga-ja-toiduparadiis. Bali is definitely place to be, if you are addicted to good food and yoga. You can roll out you mat and take yoga classes everywhere from early morning till late evening every day. The capital of yoga is Ubud, although there are many yoga places around Bali and on islands nearby. I even saw one Bikram Studio in Seminyak. When you walk around in Ubud, you can feel the yoga vibes in the air. You can see lot of beautiful yoga girls and boys walking around wearing yoga clothes and carrying yoga mats. People sitting in cafes, eating vegan food and discussing their experiences and perception of life and everybody is so friendly and willing to share whatever is up. There are so many yogashops around and many shops with bohemian style clothes and jewellery. I bought so many accessories from shop opposite to the Namaste shop (dont remember the name, but on Hanoman street), where the lady could make you your own gemstone mala, or bracelet in couple of hours. I could leave all my money there! The other shop is Sudiana Design, where I bought beautiful headpiece. Clothes are rather cheap, but there are also more expensive around, for example http://www.warriorsdivine.com/, where they sell hand-made beautiful dresses and kimonos made of silk. All handmade products are so beautiful in Bali, so bring on all your savings! There are also many shops where you can buy yogawear (Bali Spirit, Rugu, We-ar, Salty Soul) and yoga accessories. Yoga mats are also available, but they are bit expensive or in bad quality, so I would recommend to bring your own light yogamat (although big studios have everything you need). The concentration of yoga studios in Ubud is also high compared to other parts of Bali. I have visited the most famous ones - the Yogabarn and Radiantly Alive. Both studios have two floors and open air yoga-shalas with beautiful views to the nature. There are yoga classes going on from 7 till 22 every day. The selection of yoga classes is so wide, many styles and levels (beginners to advanced) are available. There is no pre-registration in Yogabarn, but you have to be there at least 30min before class to get in. There are exceptions for ecstatic dance and for tibetian bowl meditation, then you have to be there 1-1,5hrs before the class. Same thing goes when they have visiting yoga teachers or some yoga festivals going on, then you have to be really early, because the queues are huge! Yep, I didnt believe it either, but people are standing there an hour before the dance, same with tibetian bowls. Prices are better if you take 10-times card and if your friend takes same classes as you, Thats how you can save money and you both can use the same class-card. You can refill you water-bottle almost in every studio and there are usually showers also available. Yogabarn has a really nice cafe upstairs, where they offer wide selection of vegan-glutenfree-lactosefree- super healthy food. In addition, they organize different workshops and retreats, so keep eye on their webpage theyogabarn.com. The other place I could recommend is Radiantly Alive, that is located near to Ubud road. They also organise workshops and when I was there, I took Meghan Curries workshop. I didnt plan it, but when I was looking for classes to go, it was there, 2 days 9hrs long workshop. It was an amazing experience, best I ever had. She is so beautiful person inside-out and her teaching is so humble, but so skilled. I really love her movement and how she puts layer on layer accompanied with beautiful stories. Outside Ubud I visited yoga studio called Power of Now Oasis, which is located on seaside of Sanur. Also really nice yoga studio with skilled yoga teachers. When we were at Gili Trawganan (2hrs with fast boat from Bali) I took also classes in Gili Yoga, which is located to the main road. I didnt like yoga classes so much, but for beginners they are worth of trying. They have also really nice cafe nearby Banyan Tree Cafe, where I ate most delicious meals. Everything was so tasty and vegan gluten-lactosefree super healthy! There is another yogastudio in Gili Trawganan- The Yoga Place, but its location was bit tricky considering the muddy streets and no lights in the evening. They have also nice vegan cafe there. Bali is vegan and- gluten-lactosefree heaven. Everything is so fresh, healthy and many times, so cheap. If you are on budget, then warung is your place. There are thousands of warungs around, where you can get local food with 2 euros and are more than full! Nasi Goreng, Nasi Campur, Nasi etc, are things to try, fried noodles or rice with chicken, seafood and vegetables. Sate lilit with peanut sauce is my favourite food (tuna sticks and rice). Yumm! For dessert have a fresh smoothie, but ask without sugar, because they love to put sugar everywhere (if you love sugar, then you are happy in Bali!) Coconut lovers also go crazy here, because you can drink as much young coconut water as you want, also coconut yogurt, ice cream, milk etc are available. If you are keen on the western food, then you can get everything you want, but it isnt so good as local:) If you want to eat really cheap, look for night markets, where all local food stalls come together and offer everything they can make. You can choose as many things you want on your plate and it costs almost nothing. I have eaten everywhere in Bali and never had Bali belly (which means little food poisoning:) I always drink bottled water in Bali, but have always brushed my teeth with tap water and nothing happened:) Maybe I just have good digestion or gods help me with that:) When you accommodate in homestays, usually breakfast is included. They offer banana- pancakes with something (like chocolate or honey), smoothie, fruits, eggs, toast and bali coffee (people dont love it so much, but its drinkable). I am really addicted to banana pancakes, so I almost ate it every morning for 5 weeks! Fruits are also so so good. My favourites are snake fruit and dragon fruit (red is the best), mangos are also juicy, when it is mango season. If you feel that it smells like garbage, then it is durian. Balinese people love it, but for me, the smell says everything! There are so many good places where to eat in Ubud, but my favourites are on Hanoman street: Vegan Buffet (opposite to the Cocomarket) and Atman Cafe. Family owned vegan buffet is a tiny place but they offer everything. For 3 euros you can eat as much as you can and the selection is so wide. I think they had more than 15 choices every day to choose from and its more than delicious. And water is free. They also offer vegan and glutenfree cakes, but there are better places, where to eat cake (Kafe or Atman). Atman cafe was my love at first sight, and I am still in love with it. The menu is many pages long and everything is so super delicious, vegan lactose-glutenfree. For meat and fish lovers there are also options available. Atman has 2 cafes on Hanoman and the newest has a rice field view! In addition to good food, service is good as well, they repeat your order to make it clear, but its same almost everywhere in Bali. Other place I would recommend is Clear Cafe, which is really trendy and nicely decorated vegan cafe. Yoga people also love Kafe on Hanoman, but I like Atman more:) When you travel around in Bali, there are too many good places where to eat, so you find yourself eating all the time:) When you are visiting Candidasa, then go to ashram, that offers amazing home cooked food (stay there, food is included in the room rent). Tunjung hotel in Candidasa offered the best ice coffee with coconut milk (ask for it). Candidasa has also new family vegan restaurant called Refresh, where I ate most delicious vege- burger and carrot cake. In Sanur, on Mertasari beach, there is really nice place called Genius Cafe. Also so wide selection of healthy options. In Gili Trawganan, we found amazing vintage restaurant near to the exit beach. The food was great, but more impressive was the atmosphere there: bonfire, ocean and vintage furniture. Many times we ate in Gili Teak Restaurant, where good food meets ocean view as well. To sum up this food addiction post, it is almost impossible to put in to the words how cool are the interior designs of cafes or how mouthwatering is the food there and how stunning are the views, so check out by yourself! Minu lemmikpood asub Hanomani tänaval, Namaste poe vastas, kus kena naisterahvas valmistab sulle sinu valikul malakeesid, käevõrusid või mida iganes sa soovid.
Joogastuudiod on Ubudis palju. My third visit to Bali was on this year in March. I stayed for 5 weeks and started my vacation with working as a volunteer in one of the biggest yoga, dance and music festival in the world, called BaliSpirit Festival. Festival lasts 7 days and program is full of yoga-dance-breathwork workshops and dharma talks from 7am till 7pm. In the evenings there are bhakti nights were you can listen beautiful world music or dance till morning comes. The line up of the festival is impressive. Although they reveal the final program just a couple days before the festival (so Balinese style), there will be top yoga teachers - presenters, you have probably seen only in social media. Last year there were for example Ana Forrest, Tara Judelle, Tymi Howard, Tyrone Beverly, Laura Buckhart, Eoinn Finn, Katchie Ananda etc. And there are so many yoga styles presented: vinyasa, jivamukti ashtanga, hatha, kundalini, embodied flow, poetic flow, yoga dance, yin, afro flow, yoga for core, hips, inversions, hand balancing and etc. Even pirateyoga was in the schedule! Daily- programme is so concentrated, that there are even 3 workshops happening on the same time you can choose from. In the night programme you find lot of beautiful world music, but there is also ecstatic dancing almost every evening, plus beautiful ceremonies (for example cacao ceremony) taking place. Between the workshops you could get most delicious food from dharma fair (vege or non vege, glutenfree, lactosefree options as well) or buy organic products, (yoga) clothes, jewellery or accessories. Spirit festival has even the healing zone, where you can meet healer or get a palm/tarot reading. This year the festival was happening in two different places: daytime venue was about 30 minutes drive from Ubud (they had extremely well organized shuttle-service) and night time venue was in Ubud, beautiful place called Arma museum and Watergarden. So this year I decided to go to Bali on the same time the festival was happening. When I was looking out festival tickets, it was too much for me, because plane tickets to Bali are ca 450-1000 euros (depending on offers) and I was planning to stay there 4 more weeks to travel around. So I decided to apply for volunteer position. Bali Spirit team looks every year over 100 volunteers (if I remember correctly) to help them out. The recruitment starts already in September, when you have to apply for the position. When applying, you have to fill in the form, where you give overview about your previous career, strengths, weaknesses and experiences, also choose your preferable role (there are many roles available, like hosts, ticketing, gate guards, shuttle etc) and working hours (options are: morning shift 7.0-12.00, afternoon 12.00-17.00, evening 17-22.00). Not everyone is accepted, and no one guarantees the role and shift you preferred. So if you want to help as a volunteer keep eye on their webpage http://www.balispiritfestival.com/get-involved/applications. As I didnt know my plans so early, I applied in January and kept my fingers crossed that there will be more openings. So one week before my flight, in the beginning of March, I got an email that I was accepted. I paid an impact fee (each volunteer must pay 50 dollars that covers expenses like t-shirts, meals (you get one meal per day during your shift), shuttle etc) and was ready to go. Before arriving to the introduction day for volunteers, I knew that I will be in the office assisting (obviously because in my previous life when I was an office girl:), but when I was checking in, it appeared, that I will get the daytime shift 12.30-6 in the kids zone (maybe because I have graduated from educational sciences and can teach yoga for kids). Introduction day was a bit messy, we had to be there at 7, but programme started at 9. So I organized myself a driver (no organised shuttle this day) and hurried to the place. We were given overview about the festival and we met our team leaders (we had 3 bosses, which made things sometimes little bit complicated), who briefed us about our responsibilities. Everything was simple and clear, besides the fact that everyone didnt have breakfast, so people were mostly wondering about food. When we finally got to the place they offered a lunch, it was soooo crowded with hangry:) people. So next time bring your own food:), just in case. As my workday started already at 12.00 , I could only take yoga classes starting from 7. Woke up at 7, had a little breakfast in my homestay (I organised myself a homestay in Ubud on Hanoman near to Cocomarket shuttle stop), rushed to shuttle, about 20 minutes drive and I was there. After checking in (volunteers have to check in every morning and out after shift), I could take 2 yoga workshops 8-10 and 10-12. Quickly crabbing team lunch (very nice bamboo leaf packed rice with toppings) and went to work. Kids zone had big 2 -level playground, equipped with many ladders (made of bamboo), trampoline, lot of books, craft materials and things to play with. And they kept on building, so on the last day of the festival we had super safe, kid friendly, locked zone:) In addition, there was pre-planned programme for kids, including yoga, t-shirt, crown making, singing-dancing workshops, henna tatoos, you name it. Only problem was that there werent so many kids around or they didnt want to stay there a whole day. On first day, when the festival was open for community, we had so many kids, I couldnt count, so lot of fun and responsibilities (I pay all my respects to the kindergarden teachers working with children daily!!). But most of the days we had only 3-5 kids on the same time and 5-6 volunteers in the shift. So there wasnt so much to do, besides keeping the children inside the zone (most difficult task, because they wanted to run out and meet their parents) and babysitting the little ones (sometimes they were so little, 2-3 yrs, couldnt talk and missed their mommies). We couldnt go to workshops as well, because it was our shift, so we did something to fill in the time. Sometimes, our bosses let us to go to workshops, we were desiring to go, but we had to work longer or change the shift. One time, I even could go to the ecstatic dance during my shift:) We never ended our workday at 5, usually 6 o clock, so I never got the chance to check out from my shift, because everyone had left already:) At home I was around 7, so it was little struggle to get to the concerts that started already at 7 on night time venue, but if there is a will, there is a way:) Anyways, it reminded me early days of my career at the office, when I had done all my tasks (because I was hard-worker:), but couldnt go home, so I just sat there, waiting the end of a workday. But I can understand their perception as well, there could be kids coming at any time and you have to be ready for that, so you need staff be around. Our team was super supportive, very international and fun and kids zone was so well organised and equipped. Hopefully there will be more children next time:) To sum up, do I regret volunteering at Spirit Festival? Not at all, really. I am more than grateful all over, that they accepted my late application and I could be there, volunteering in the kids zone, because I got back so much more. I met so many beautiful people, I ate most delicious food. I danced barefoot every day for hours b. I listened beautiful music. I drank much coconut water. I loved the vibes and there were good vibes, only. Met wonderful yoga teachers around world, got so much inspiration for my yoga practise. Learned so much about myself. I cried many times in the end of a yoga class and I never cry in the yoga. I cried because I was so happy, because i had this chance to experience all of that. So it is all worth it and I could do it once more with joy and enthusiasm! Sellel aastal õnnestus mul olla vabatahtlikuks Bali Spirit Festivalil. mis on üks suurimaid jooga-tantsufestivale maailmas. Festival kestab kokku 7 päeva ja programm sisaldab endas hulganisti jooga- tanstu- hingamise- meeleteadlikkuse töötubasid hommikul kella 7 kuni õhtuni välja. Lisaks toimuvad õhtuti bhakti-ööd. erinevad kontserdid, tseremooniad (näiteks tee ja kakao tseremoonia) ja ekstaatilisne tants kuni hommikuni. Kuigi festivali lõplik programm avaldatakse
It has been a long time since I wrote something here. In one moment you realise that it has been almost a year. Everything goes by so fast, but if I look back, it has been the best time of my life. I have been teaching so many groups on different topics around Estonia, I had great students at University. I have chance to teach yoga in my favourite studios in Tallinn. I just love those places and people there. I am so grateful for meeting so many beautiful souls, seen people growing, getting stronger and more flexible. I have met many glowing mums-to-be-yogis and new yoga babies are born. Aeg liigub hämmastavalt kiiresti. Ühel hetkel märkad, et pea aasta on möödunud viimasest postitusest. Tõesti see aasta on olnud parim- ma olen palju õpetanud ja õppinud. Juhendanud erinevaid gruppe, aidanud mõtestada noorsootööd, strateegilist planeerimist, õppimist ja õpetamist. Mul on võimalik juhendada joogat parimates joogastuudiotes. Nii palju tugevust ja painduvust, nii palju kasvamist ja rõõmu, palju uusi joogabeebisid:) I went back to Bali, I was volunteering in Bali Spirit Festival. I took part of many yoga workshops, I travelled around Bali and Gilis with my family, but I promise Ill write many posts about it. Keset õpetamist ja õppimist õnnestus mul tagasi minna Balile. Saarele, kus on seni osa minu südamest. Ma olin vabatahtlik maailma suurimal joogafestivalil, osalesin paljudes töötubades. Now I am organising my first yoga retreat in beautiful place in south of Estonia, where good food meets yoga. The place itself has a good energy- surrounded by healing energy of herbs, river and woods. We start with yin yoga through storytelling, stories are about returning, being and trusting the flow of life. Then we move from silence to movement and energy. We start from core, adding layer by layer, single movement becomes flow. Flow that comes through your body. Then we move back to silence with beautiful live music. We end our yoga retreat with walking meditation in my favourite place- Hüpassaare bog in early morning to see the sunrise. We will salute the sun and take a tour in fields of herbs. I hope it will be exactly like I have dreamed many times. And I promise it will be magic, because I put my whole heart into it! Ootan! I ve been travelling a day I ve been travelling a year Travelling a lifetime to find my way home. Home is where the heart is, Home is where the heart is and my heart is with you. I have been in Bali three times: first in 2014, then 2015 and this year was the third visit. Even now I am still dreaming to go back. When I visited Bali first time, I just had finished my 10 year long career in the Ministry. I had no idea what to do next, where to go or what to do with my life. I was tired and looking for a place where I could go alone, do some yoga and where sun is up most of the day. I had been travelling a lot around in Europe (because of my job), so I was planning to go far away and Asia seemed nice. I had been only in Singapore before (which is very European btw) for my work, so I decided to go to Bali, just like that. When I was googel-ing around, I found website bookyogaretreats.com and there it was: Gedong Gandhi Ashram, offering one week yoga retreat and it was settled. Although I had been travelling a lot by myself, I was a bit afraid. I didnt no much about the culture or ashram life, also my yoga practise was just in the beginning. So, no expectations at all. 25 hrs later, in the middle of the night, I stepped out into the hot humid climate and my driver was waiting for me. We drove almost 2 hrs to Candidasa, which is located east Bali. I was shown my little bungalow and I slept till midday. When I woke up, fairy had left breakfast on my balcony and I was welcomed by most warm-hearted Rudi, who is one of the sons of the founder of the Ashram. So I was here, between the Bali sea and fresh water lagoon, surrounded by the mountains. I am so grateful and lucky that I ended up there, not in the touristic places like Kuta, Seminyak or Sanur, so I could see real Bali, learn about its culture and get to know people as they are. Ashram has been active since 1976 and its focus is on delivering actual health and education services through its well established Nature Cure Health Clinic (acupuncture and traditional herbal medicine), introducing Gandhian ideals to the Ashram run kindergarten and to its own cadres of Ashram's young members. Ashram earns its income from paying guests and donation. So if you want to do help ashram, help children from rural areas to get good education, your staying is most welcome. Accommodation is simple, but you don`t need that hot water, because it so warm outside. I have been in Bali always around March and May, which is considered a low season, so its hot, humid and rainy (but not so much rain in Candidasa). Rooms are equipped with fan to keep you breezy, also you are located by the ocean, so it makes little bit cooler. I dont like conditioners anyway:) Food is included in the room rate, so they offer 3 vegetarian-fish home cooked delicious meals a day, plus snacks/hot water that keep you more than full a whole day. You can take yoga classes given by local teachers 3 times a week. Kawi the resident yoga teacher and the admin-manager of ashram, is raised up there. When you meet him, you are taken. He smiles, sings and plays kirtan and makes yoga classes simple and happy. He has a great talent to explain you all the mindful things in very simple way. If you are into yoga, then look out yoga retreats they organise yearly. The members of ashram follow strict routine of puja or pray time four times a day, where you can take part of. Also there are meal blessings before every meal. If you are not used to it (like most of Estonians), you can take silently part of it. But if you are brave enough, you can sing along and in the end of week, you can remember the most complicated words already:) Pujas are voluntary for visitors, but I loved the agni hotra (fire ceremony) and evening prayers. Ashram has an acupuncture clinic where most charming doctor cures you any pain you have:) First time I went there I was bit cautious about needles, but everything was so relaxing and professional, so definitely worth of trying. Clinic is open to locals and is donation based, but for visitors the session costs 50000 rp (if I remember correctly). Yoga retreat daily program was quite intensive, but custom made depending on the participants. We started at 7 with sun salutation and meditation practise, followed by breakfast. After brekkie we had 1,5 hrs asana class and after lunch afternoon yoga. Yoga shala has an amazing view to the ocean! Besides yoga we went to snorkelling and had some beach time (white sands). Visited water temple and had a yoga class there. The view is amazing! We visited the old village Teganan where life is still followed by the ancient ways. The entrance is donation based and you get a tour guide for your contribution. On high demand, Rudi organised us cycling tour through the rice fields and we had a marvellous chance to visit his family members. We had 2hrs hiking trip to mountains, including ceremony led by local priest. I remember discussing meditation practise with the priest and he said that it is hard for him as well:) But the highlights of being in ashram was temple visits with young members. I still remember going up to the hill in the late evening, when moon was watching us. And we said our prays, singing mantras, putting flowers on head and purifying our faces with holy water. It is so touching to see dedication of prayers, all dressed up for showing their respect to their gods. I am so grateful and blessed that they let us be part of it, sharing their prays and open heart with us. Last time I went there, there were some changes happening in the ashram compund, but you can still find that door from the lagoon side and behind tht door there are real people, with smiles and dedication and willing to share that passion with you. So if you are in Candidasa please step by, or stay for a night or take yoga class (only 4 euros) there or if you are more into yoga, take a whole yoga retreat there! Thats how you can support ashram life and education of young people living there. More information can be find on ashrams webpage: http://www.ashramgandhi.com/ or their FB page.NB! Pictures in the end of post:) Ma olen Balit külastanud kolmel korral: 2014 ja 2015 ning ka sellel I love the saying that aim of the yoga is to create space were once stuck. To unveil layers of protection you have built around your heart. To appreciate your body and become aware of the mind and the noise it creates. To make peace with who you are in creating our natural wholeness, balanced integrity of our yin and yang nature. I am naturally yang-type of person. I love sun and light, hot weather and spicy food. I function better on daytime and love to be active and spend time outside. I'`m not good at keeping emotions inside and tend to act before I think. I am loud and want everything happen here and now. Although I`m pretty earthy, I love to dream about many things and sometimes feel like the sky is the only limit. Although I love to be a woman, passionate about my home, beautiful clothes, cooking and dancing, on the same time I' m a true warrior who can handle everything without help. Tough, independent woman with lot of fire inside. So for a long time I created a very yang-like lifestyle for myself. Always planning, controlling and leading at work and home. Yes, I did achieve a lot, I had a wonderful career as a manager and I surely seemed like very gentle and amiable person. I had always my agenda in my pockets and no matter what the weather or how many times I had to try, I did it. Because I was a warrior and many times even acted like a true marshal. My way or no way. Yep hard to admit, but same at home and everywhere. Even though I was a true woman, my life was lacking yin side of being. I couldn’t trust the flow of life, I have used to plan and control everything. I was constantly planning, thinking and reacting emotionally. I didn't hear my body, I had terrible headaches, I was intensive and unbalanced. I kept on going very yang-way, when eventually life gave me painful lesson to learn. I couldn't plan anything, I just lived my life day by day not knowing what`s going to happen next. I had to live in the present moment, there was no clear future and past was full of memories. Other way was impossible. I got lesson for a lifetime. Although everything worked out fine in the end, I needed a help to find myself again. The very first yoga class I took, was kind of Yin, slow, holding poses long and just being there with my body and mind. I couldn'`t understand what was the idea of sitting there and doing barely nothing. I was counting minutes to get out of the room and away from my thoughts that were circulating in my head. I wanted to have physical exercise, to move fast and burn lot of calories. So I stepped into intensive yang yoga practice just to take care of my body. That’s how my personal journey started and how yoga approaches to many students, via physical exercise in order to get in shape, reduce stress or to find the way out from something that doesn't feel right anymore. At one point during my regular yoga-life, I got noticed that yang yoga practice was quietly sneaking into my lifestyle. I started to notice my emotional body, how my thoughts are flowing and changing and affecting my physical body. Yoga taught me flexibility in life, how to cope with other’s needs. And patience, still my biggest struggle in life. I understood that I can' `t control everything and learned how to live peace with myself when everything doesn'` t go the way I planned or decided. I started let go of things or just let them be the way they are. I understood that I can't change others, but myself. I followed the moon and let things happen way they are. I trusted the flow of life. I started to love yin in yoga and life. I let myself be in yin yoga and it was deliberating. I was amazed how it can be, that without sweating and intensive exercise you feel so light and relaxed. I felt more energy and the mind was clear as well. And believe me, it isn' `t easy to sit there with all your flowing thoughts and body that wants to move out from posture. Yin side of yoga has taught me to lose control, let things go and let them be, and this has been and still is hardest lesson in my life. While teaching, I share my personal practice, what I have learned and experienced. I teach mainly yang-style of yoga, because my personal journey began from there and I am still in love with vinyasa. To begin with the tangible part of us is more common in many ways, but still yet pretty hard to understand and control. We always say that do your practice, but listen to your body. And that listening part is very hard, we are still pushing strong and shaking in the postures doing more harm than good for our bodies. So many times we start with the yang practises, sometimes we feel something, even fall, get angry or start to cry. Then we start noticing, during or after yoga. Maybe we even listen our body and mind, learn something and the yin part has started. Sometimes while I practise, I start with yin postures to get into the skin and bones and slowly continue to feel the tangible part of human, muscles and body. I use yin yoga in my prenatal classes, I do breathing exercises to get connected to body and poses that help body to be more relaxed. I love how children get naturally yin, they feel their bones and skin, could imagine deeper tissues of the body. We are on constant journey towards wholeness and balance, integrating yin and yang sides of life. Sometimes there are more yin and other times yang, the challenge is to acknowledge the current state and to try to find balance again. Every single day of your life. Yang part is more understandable and achievable for us, because we see it, we can touch it. The yin part of life and yoga takes more time to understand, because it is hard to touch untouchable. Holding space for now is hard, being in between is difficult. You can`t push anything nor force yourself, you have to feel it in your skin, bones and with your heart. It takes time, but it is worth it. It can change your life and yang practice. It opens your body and mind in many different ways. It teaches you how to let things be as they are, when you can`t change anything. It gives you time, extends reaction time, teaches patience and stillness in life. But in the end its all about wholeness. Where dark meets light, water with fire, cold with hot, speed meets stillness, activity with patience and moon with sun. Where yang and yin are both present. You may have not gone where you intended to go, but you will end up where you need to be. My education speaks about learning and teaching, beliefs and stories. Every teacher and learner has their own learning path. My story begins in early childhood, when I was making up sad songs and presenting them proudly to my family or playing cafe with my sister wearing my mothers dresses and high heals. But many times I loved to play school at home, trying to engage my sister into learning process. When growing up, it was obvious that there wasn't enough material me for becoming a fado-singer. Although I have always been passionate about cooking, I couldn't see myself spending all my working hours baking and preparing food for others. I couldn't see myself as a teacher as well, so after graduation I decided to choose another field of study. But after a year in the university I found myself changing the subject and took on adult education instead, however I was more interested in organisational development than adult learning. After 11 years of working in different organisations, I felt it was time for a change. Surely you've heard the saying that if you don't know exactly what to do with your life, think about your childhood. What did you love, what kind of games did you play? If you can"t find any direct links, you can still get some hints. So all of the sudden I found myself immersed in the role of a teacher, teaching students, adults and children. To teach what has taught me my education, experiences and yoga-life. In the university, we were constantly asked to reflect on teaching and learning, but only now I can say that teaching for me is sharing. While teaching, I share what I have experienced, learned, and what I know and can. My students will share what they know and have experienced. Although every learner and organisation have their own personal learning journey, each can take out something from the shared teaching-learning practice. The learning journey can be a smooth, high-speed road without any u-turns. But there may be an other road for you- a bumpy, rough, and without clear signs or destination. Even if an organisation or individual is on the same route, the views are different and some don't even see anything. Sometimes, you know your destination, but other times the end is the beginning of something. I believe that learning is about to notice your journey and not to forget to enjoy the views. There are so many ways to get there and role of the teacher is to lead the learners towards different destinations, but the journey and views are chosen by the learner. Even if we are on the same journey, you still learn and notice different things. Just like in yoga. Everyone has their own personal yoga practise, because every person is in a different life phase, with a different body, experiences and philosophies. Tutors can create an environment for learning, experiencing and changes in a secure way, but you can't force change or take responsibility for someone else's choices. The body and mind are ready for a change when there is the right time and place. Sometimes it takes lot of effort to see the results. But other times you push really hard and nothing happens. A lot of patience is required. Other times you need to step out of your comfort zone. Some days you feel that your physical body is willing, but the fear is holding you back. Yoga has taught me the flow of life - whether to give yourself a chance, let go or hold on to. While teaching, I share my personal practise, what I have learned and experienced. It is hard to teach teamwork or strategy writing if you have never practised strategical thinking or never worked in a team. The same is in yoga. You mustn't teach headstand, if you haven't even tried it out on yourself, even if you know theoretically how to do it. I love theories and science, but it is equally important for me to know how the theory works in practice. Therefore, I'm not attached strictly to one school or style of yoga. There is something to grasp from every style, type and teacher and to make it your own. Sometimes you need more yin yoga and sometimes your body just requires intense yang practice. Other times, it is sufficient to take 5 minutes for meditation or feel the need to practise savasana. full day. The most important thing is to listen to your body and choose the yoga that suits your life here and now. I believe that every one has to find his own path by trying out different teachers, classes and styles. My "sharing yoga" consists of sharing my yoga life, classes, practices, knowledge, skills and ideas. I am very blessed that I have had many yoga teachers to learn from and so grateful that my own learning journey has been rather devious, with no clear signs the more I have had the opportunity to experience, learn and share. I love when a yoga teacher is sincere and real, just as she/he is, with his strengths and weaknesses. To some, it seems that a true yoga teacher must be dressed in white, to be extremely spiritual, definitely vegetarian and perform perfectly all the impossible tricks seen in the media. My best friend asked the other day: "You are yoga teacher, do you listen to your body? Are you happy every day? Do you eat healthy every day and enjoy every moment as it is? " Of course not, because I'm a normal human being with all my weaknesses. I have flaws and I make mistakes. I do not live in a perfect harmony with the whole universe. I don't always make healthy choices in the food section, but I am aware of how my body feels after eating something my body doesn't like. I admit frankly that I don't perform any complex tricks and I have a lot to learn. I try to meditate and it is difficult for me as well. I don't think that the yogi must be immersed in white, because every one has the right to dress exactly how they prefer. I'm not a vegetarian, but I generally eat those things that fit my body. Even though some days seem the blackest on earth, my yoga life has taught me to recognise and acknowledge these feelings without judgements. And most of my days I smile, listen to my body and try to make healthy choices. I practise yoga every day, even if it is only 5 minutes sitting in silence. I'm just as I am, because I can't and don't wish to be somebody else. In my teaching-learning journey I have met a lot of people I wouldn't have met other way. The life of teaching-learning has led me to places where I woudn't have been, and the views have been wonderful. Sometimes I'm caught in situations where the learning is painful, but when looking back, I have realized that I gained lot more than I've never expected. Teaching has given me more happiness than any other job I have done, although it is not always easy to teach when people resist on learning. But at the same time I've heard many grateful words, that make my heart melt. You can't describe the joy when after yoga class you can see people glowing even though they don't say anything or haven't got glitter on their clothes. You can feel it. Many times I fly away with a grateful heart and clouds underfoot after teaching yoga class. I am sincerely grateful and blessed that life has given me the opportunity to learn and teach, and directed me to this journey, in spite of all my efforts not to become a teacher. To be who I am in the best possible way, learning and enjoying my journey as a student and a teacher, reflecting back the inner light of every human being and inspire to give their best. Minu haridus kõneleb õppimisest ja õpetamisest, arusaamadest ja lugudest. Sometimes, people do not dare to come to yoga class, because it seems that the body is not that fit or there is not enough flexibility to perform all those postures we have seen on the pictures. You have definitely seen yogis who are so light they could stand on their fingers feet up high or postures where you can`t distinguish where are the legs, head or hands. The perception of yoga is different- some think that yoga is all about bending, breathing and sitting, no physical effort has been made. It makes no sense to compare yourself with others, because every body and mind has their time to change. Some things come easily, some don`t. My body hasn`t been always the same: there has been larger and smaller versions of me. I`ve always loved exercising and moving my body, but on the same time I love cooking and eating. So in 2012, I was a quite curvy lady! But it didn`t bother me at all, I had clothes to wear and life was good in every way. I loved myself and others loved me. So it was pretty strange when an acquaintance marked in other day that I`ve become beautiful lately. In my opinion I`ve always been beautiful… Although I was happy with my shape, my health wasn`t that good. I had terrible migraines for years and sometimes I was lying in my bed for days and it didn`t get better. My doctor said that I should take pills every day till the end of my life! It was a shock, so I decided to find out alternatives and changed my diet. I was diagnosed lactose intolerance and advised not to eat so much gluten. I was still cooking a lot, but started to invent new non gluten, non diary recipes, because I still wanted to enjoy my food! I lost some weight, but on intense times I still had migraines, so I started doing yoga. The most important thing in yoga is to start where you are, with what you have. Although I was a bit thinner, I was weak and not really flexible. I've been noticing how my body changed during the time, it become more flexible and stronger. Yoga isn`t secret cure that makes you immediately small and slim. I have an experience of training really hard and eating healthy, but nothing changed. I even gained some weight, because of my stress level was pretty high and when there are no results it gets higher and higher! Yoga is a practice that operates on both levels- physical and mental, so it will surely help you achieve better shape. Yoga teaches to listen to your body and diminishes stress level, that is crucial in losing weight, if this is your main goal. It makes you sweat and engages your whole body and mind. Yoga helps to raise happiness level and happy people are beautiful people, even in round shape. I have seen how yoga makes people sparkle, they become happier and healthier. Even yoga clothes start to take happy colors! Vahel ei julge inimesed joogatundi tulla, It`s been awhile since my last entry here. It seems unbelievable, that 4 months have passed by without noticing. The end of the last yeas was difficult: weather turned grey again and mood started to take different shades of grey as well. It is the feeling in the end of the year, when you review last years resolutions and admit that you have failed in every single one. Year 2015 began with big failure. I tried to change the world, but nobody wanted change. I had to change myself or resign. I tried to leave everything behind and decided to escape to the most beautiful ashram in Bali. Although the place is heaven on earth, I couldn`t find peace, because you can`t escape from yourself. So I was wondering all the time what could have been, if I had done this and that and on the same time was trying to figure out what`s going to happen in the future. Same thoughts were going up every day and night and there were only few days before departure I could switch off my mind and enjoy my yoga practice, amazing surrounding, food and lovely people. I came back, worked a bit, but most of the time was trying to figure out what to do with my life. I decided to take a sabbatical for the summer and did everything I hadn`t got time for years. It was great summer! Then the season changed , autumn came, and weather turned grey again. I was still thinking and wondering day by day what to do with my life. I had many choices, but couldn`t decide, which was the right one. I ran 4-5 times a week and practised yoga almost every day, but nothing changed: I didn`t get stronger, thinner nor more flexible, I failed and couldn`t even do asanas I did before. The season changed again. All of sudden it was cold and everything turned white. Things started to settle down- one after another. Today, when I was walking around, it suddenly hit me. Am I living a life I have dreamed of? I don`t have to be in the office from 8 to 5 any more, I can plan my time. I dreamed of having different kind of jobs. Now I have several jobs: I still teach at the university, but also work as a prenatal yoga teacher in a beautiful studio in downtown, as well as I love to teach vinyasa classes to my yogis and yoginis in my hometown studios and can share my practice with my little yogis. I have dreamed of helping rural areas in their development and had an idea of working with youth policy. And that`s exactly what I am doing right now. I have followed my path and everything is happening right now. It is real, I live in my dreams right now. But life is not that simple. Dreams are in constant change, they grow, change and multiple. Some of them are in clear shape, but some still form and forming process is complicated and painful. You don``t know any more if they are your dreams or how these dreams fit into your current life where other dreams are just happening. Soon you discover that you are analysing past again and living in the future. But life has other plans for you. It is the same with yoga. You can push really hard, but nothing happens. And then you will start to quiet your mind, let everything go, surrender and out of blue everything happens. In sudden, you are stronger, more flexible and can do things you never dreamed of. I can`t still do the handstand, but I am curious when it`s going to happen. Be patient. Viimasest kirjutisest on möödunud 4 kuud. |
